Grandmom Keen’s Blueberry Buckle

Every day I think of my grandmother. A photograph will stir up a memory. Driving around the Cape I will see her favorite restaurants or the church that was her home away from home. Even though she has been gone for several years memories of the time we spent together fill me with a sense of loss that is soothed by love.

In a little green box tucked in the back of my kitchen cabinet are a collection of my grandmother’s hand-written recipes. Each recipe is on an index card and in the top right hand corner is a date and the name of the person who gave her the recipe. Many of the recipes are from before I was born. But there are a few that bring me right back to my childhood. One is from my first grade teacher, Mrs. Gray. It’s for cinnamon raisin bread baked in a coffee can. Another is a recipe for a giant German chocolate cake that we made for International Day my sophomore year of high school. Then there is my favorite no-bake chocolate peanut butter cookies and the recipe I pull out every summer. Blueberry Buckle! If you think your house smells wonderful after baking chocolate chip cookies, wait until you try blueberry buckle. Serve it warm with vanilla ice-cream and I guarantee you’ll want seconds!
